Vlastníkem domény po její expiraci je její registrátor. Držitel je držitelem domény od její registrace po její expiraci, po expiraci již držitelem není. Je zde ochranná lhůta, kdy je možné zadat restore (tedy jí reaktivovat) a doménu tak získat zpět. Ochranná lhůta zjednodušeně řečeno dává předkupní právo na její obnovu.
